Colorado CHP Update (Effective July 1, 2025)
If you’re applying for a NEW Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit or RENEWING, training requirements changed for applications submitted on/after 7/1/2025 (HB24-1174).
What’s new:
-
Training must be IN PERSON (no online/virtual portions).
-
Training must be taught by a Sheriff “Verified” Firearms Instructor (verification is recognized statewide; instructors are listed by local sheriff offices).
-
Written exam + live-fire qualification required for both new and renewal classes.
NEW permit applicants:
-
Minimum 8 hours of instruction (includes written exam + live-fire).
-
Training certificate must be dated within 1 year of your application.
RENEWALS (applications received on/after 7/1/2025):
-
Renewal “refresher” class is minimum 2 hours, must be in person, and must include written exam + live-fire.
-
Refresher certificate must be dated within 6 months of renewal submission.
-
Many counties will only accept renewals up to 120 days before expiration—check your sheriff’s CHP page.
Always verify details with your county sheriff before applying. (This post is info-only, not legal advice.)
